CONFIRMED: 17 people to race for Malawi presidency
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has certified 17 candidates to contest as president in the elections on 16 September.
In a statement, MEC chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja mentioned that 20 nominations for the presidential position were received.
MEC states that, in compliance with applicable electoral laws and regulations, 17 candidates have been verified as fulfilling all criteria for valid nomination after a comprehensive evaluation process.
Nevertheless, the three nominations for Prophet David Mbewe of the Liberation for Economic Freedom Party, Nationalist Patriotic Party-NPP, President Daniel Dube, and independent presidential candidate Reverend Hardwick Kaliya were not authorized, as they failed to satisfy the required standards.
