Malawi, the belief in witchcraft is widespread, with 74% of the population believing in its existence.
This belief is deeply rooted in the traditional African worldview, where the spirit world and material world are seen as interacting. The country’s laws regarding witchcraft are complex and often contradictory.
The Witchcraft Act of 1911, introduced during colonial rule, denies the existence of witchcraft and makes it an offense to accuse someone of practicing witchcraft.
However, many Malawians, including some lawmakers, believe that witchcraft is real and should be criminalized.
This has led to a situation where people accused of witchcraft are often subjected to violence, intimidation, and imprisonment.
