Malawi Police condemns mob justice

Police in Limbe have strongly condemned acts of mob justice that led to the death of a 36-year-old man in Blantyre.
The victim, identified as Blessings Mtutile, was accused of breaking into a house in the same village during the night of September 4.
According to police findings, Mtutile allegedly entered the house intending to steal assorted household items.
However, the homeowner reportedly woke up and raised an alarm, prompting neighbors to rush to the scene.
Mtutile attempted to flee but was captured by the crowd.Police investigations reveal that on the morning of September 5, Mtutile was discovered unconscious and severely injured in nearby bushes.
Officers rushed him to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death upon arrival.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for Limbe Police Station, Sub-Inspector Sam Kadyole, said inquiries have been launched into the incident.
He warned communities against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that mob justice is a crime.
“Efforts are underway to arrest and bring to justice everyone who was involved in this act,” Kadyole said.
Police have since appealed to the public to report suspected criminals to law enforcement authorities instead of resorting to violence.
Mtutile hailed from Matalala Village, T/A Somba, in Blantyre District.
