Court orders Chakwera to spend 15 years in prison

A court in Lilongwe has sentenced Notice Chakwera to 15 years in prison for stealing goods worth K300 000.

Kanengo police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira said Chakwera is already in prison where he is serving a 12-year sentence for a similar offence.

He pleaded guilty to the new charge before the court could decide on his previous charge.

Prosecutor Grace Soko told the court that Chakwera and his accomplices stole goods including plastic buckets from Syno Hydro on July 14 last year while carrying dangerous weapons.

Senior Resident Magistrate Shukurani Kumbani said she heard that Chakwera and his accomplices were first tied up with ropes by security guards at the scene before committing the crime.

Chakwera hails from Mvunguti/TA Mkukula village in Dowa district.
