Local plane in Thyolo!

Christopher Kamunga, a 37-year-old innovator from Thyolo, Malawi, has made a groundbreaking achievement by building an aircraft prototype, dubbed ALBATROSS – CHRISS 001.

This remarkable feat is the culmination of seven years of hard work and determination.

Despite facing financial challenges that forced him to discontinue his formal studies in aviation, Kamunga persevered, relying on locally available materials to design and assemble the prototype.

Kamunga is now appealing for public and government support to refine his aircraft and contribute to Malawi’s innovation space.

His work has caught the attention of Thyolo District Commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga, who has commended Kamunga’s ingenuity and pledged to engage the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) to provide assistance.

This innovation comes at a time when Malawi is emphasizing the importance of youth-driven innovations in driving economic transformation. With proper financial and technical support, Kamunga’s project has the potential to make a significant impact on the country’s innovation landscape.
