Dramatic Uturn on school opening

In a dramatic twist, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has backtracked on its earlier announcement and maintained September 22 as the official opening date for the 2025/26 academic year.

The decision comes just hours after the ministry had shocked many by declaring that schools would instead open on September 15.

The earlier justification was to allow students who registered for the general elections while at school to cast their votes.

However, in a late-night statement issued around midnight, the ministry made a sharp U-turn, clarifying that September 22 remains the valid opening date and it further urged the public to dismiss any other communication circulating on social media.

The sudden flip-flop quickly ignited debate across online platforms, with critics and education analysts accusing the ministry of causing unnecessary confusion. Many argued that such short-notice changes undermine planning for students, teachers, and parents alike.

The ministry has not provided further explanation for its reversal, leaving questions hanging as the countdown to the academic year continues.
