Simene kulili: Police arrest four over planned violence
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested four individuals accused of conspiring to burn down major markets in Lilongwe in an alleged attempt to disrupt the upcoming September 16, 2025, General Elections.
According to Malawi Police Spokesperson, Peter Kalaya, the suspects had planned to torch Mtandire, Mchesi, Chinsapo, and Msiriza markets while also targeting the Chingeni Roadblock in Balaka to block the transportation of election materials.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Geofrey Kamanjengo, Fanwick Kerod, Upire Mkulumba, and Ladwell Ligomeka.
They were apprehended in Lilongwe and Blantyre.
Police say they are still hunting for other accomplices linked to the conspiracy.
The four will be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, contrary to Section 404 of the Penal Code.
Investigations have revealed that the suspects created a WhatsApp group where they mobilized funds, recruited others, and strategized on how to carry out the plan.
Police have assured Malawians of their vigilance and readiness to thwart any sinister schemes aimed at disturbing the electoral process.
