Former Malawi leader Mutharika LEADS!

Former President Peter Mutharika is emerging as the leading candidate in the preliminary results of the ongoing elections in Malawi.

As the counting of votes progresses, Mutharika is unofficially reported to have garnered around 53% of the votes, in contrast to incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera’s 35%.

With the results still being compiled, the Malawi Electoral Commission has not yet released official figures; however, initial reports suggest a strong performance for Mutharika in his traditional strongholds.

Nonetheless, Chakwera is demonstrating to be a formidable contender, especially in the Central region, where he has maintained considerable support.

Up until now, Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission, Justice Anabel Mtalimanja, has issued a serious warning to political parties against prematurely declaring themselves as winners.

She stated that such actions undermine the integrity of the electoral process and are instilling panic among the populace.

According to the law, the commission is required to announce the results by at least September 24th.

Seventeen presidential candidates have been competing for the highest office.
