Malawi elections officer attempts suicide

A dramatic incident at Nkhoma sewage dam, where a 53-year-old man, Clement Chikankha, attempted to take his own life.

According to reports, Chikankha, an officer at Nkhoma, had been struggling with the pressure of his role in the ongoing General Elections.

He had confessed to a colleague, Donnex Kunthani, that he felt he had failed to deliver on his responsibilities as a Constituency Returning Officer (CRO).

After a distressing phone call, Kunthani and others rushed to the sewage dam, where they found Chikankha struggling to stay afloat. Rescue efforts were successful, and Chikankha was rushed to Nkhoma Mission Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. His condition is reported to be fair.

The incident has been reported to the authorities, and an investigation is underway.
