Supporters celebrate Mutharika’s victory despite no official declaration

Crowds of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters in Thyolo gathered at the District Commissioner’s office on Monday, celebrating what they claim is Professor Peter Mutharika’s presidential victory.

The scenes of jubilation included singing, dancing, and waving party flags.

Supporters said they were confident Mutharika had secured a win in the just-ended elections.

Similar celebrations erupted in Blantyre on Sunday night, where DPP loyalists paraded through the streets, chanting slogans and blowing vuvuzelas in anticipation of the official announcement.

However, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has not yet declared the winner of the presidential race.

Vote tallying is still underway at the national tally center in Lilongwe.
