“Congratulations”- Chakwera tells Mutharika on phone
President Lazarus Chakwera has congratulated former president Prof. Peter Mutharika for being elected as the next president of Malawi, despite the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) not completing the official announcement of all results.
In a national address delivered today at noon from the State House, Chakwera said it was already evident that Mutharika had won the elections based on the results released so far.
He disclosed that he had personally called Mutharika earlier in the morning to extend his congratulations.
On Monday, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabelle Mtalimanja announced results from 11 councils, bringing the tally to 24 out of 36.
Chakwera noted that from the 24 councils announced, it was clear that Mutharika was leading by a significant margin.
Chakwera further revealed that he has instructed his team to make arrangements for a smooth and orderly handover of power to Mutharika. He stressed that such a transition is important for peace, unity, and democratic stability in Malawi.
The national address came just two hours before MEC was scheduled to announce the final results for the remaining 12 councils.
