Bad woman: Mother kills son in Balaka

Police in Balaka have arrested a 38-year-old woman, Alefa Katema, on suspicion that she murdered his 15-year-old son, Tony Chiutira.

The incident happened at Kankao Village in Balaka District.

Police report indicates that the father, the suspect and the deceased were staying together in the same house as a family, but they were fond of quarrelling each other.

On September 16, 2025 at around 23:00 hours, the father and the suspect started quarrelling which led in fighting.This did not please Tony (now deceased) who later told his mother (suspect) to stop the fight with his father.

When the suspect saw this, she was not happy for that and she thought that Tony was siding with his father.

In course of that, the suspect took a half burnt brick and hit his son Tony on the forehead which made him to sustain deep cut wound.Upon seeing that, the father took his son Tony to Kankao Health Centre where he was referred to Balaka District Hospital for he had a fracture on the skull where he was admitted.

On Wednesday September 24, 2025 at about 18:00 hours, Tony died while receiving treatment at Balaka District Hospital.Postmortem was conducted which revealed that death was due to head injury, secondary to the assault.

The suspect, Alefa Katema, who comes from Chimpakati Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chanthunya in Balaka District, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of murder, while the deceased, Tony Chiutira, comes from Kankao Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chanthunya in Balaka District.
