As Blantyre prepares to welcome a surge of visitors for the inauguration of President Peter Mutharika, local sex workers are expressing optimism about the financial opportunities the weekend will bring.

With anticipation building, many are gearing up to increase their prices in response to the influx of guests, hoping to capitalize on the bustling atmosphere.

Bridget, a seasoned sex worker, shared her expectations in an interview with Malawi Data News.

“We are very happy that this weekend will be busy. We expect to make more money as visitors come to celebrate the inauguration. Tonight, we will raise our prices to reflect the increased demand, ” she said.

Violet, who works at Kamba, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the positive economic impact that such events can have on the community.

“It’s great to see money circulating. We hope that the new DPP government will consider implementing simpler laws regarding sex work,” she stated.

“Having clear regulations could improve our safety and working conditions.”The discussions around sex work laws in Malawi remain contentious, with advocates arguing for better recognition and protection for sex workers.

Currently, the legal status of sex work in the country remains complex, leaving many in the industry vulnerable to violence and exploitation.

While some view the sex work sector with skepticism, Bridget and Violet represent a perspective that underscores the economic realities faced by many in Blantyre.

Their hopes for legislative changes reflect a desire for safety and legitimacy in their work.
