“Walk the talk”- Umodzi Party tells President Mutharika

Umodzi Party President Thomas Wezzie Kaumba has congratulated Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on his victory in the September 16 presidential election, saying Malawians have placed their trust in him to lead the country.

Kaumba: We want action.

However, Kaumba expressed concerns over Mutharika’s inaugural speech, which called for patience and warned of tough times ahead, saying it’s “more or less like an insult” given the current economic hardships faced by Malawians.

“We expected to see this administration have answers already in place before attaining government,” Kaumba said.

“Urging Malawians to remain patient is an insult, particularly at a time they’re living a miserable life.”

The Umodzi Party leader also reminded Mutharika of his campaign promises, including free secondary education and providing four bags of fertilizer to each household.

Kaumba further criticized Mutharika’s appointments, citing examples of individuals facing corruption charges, such as Alfred Gangata, Joseph Mwanamveka, and Richard Luhanga, whose cases are still in court.

“Malawi cannot win the fight against corruption if the fighters are corruptors,” he said.

The Umodzi Party has pledged to provide checks and balances to the new administration, ensuring it serves the interests of all Malawians.

Kaumba also condemned the DPP supporters’ chaotic behavior, such as the scramble for bus depot ownership and the Regional Governor for the South’s invasion of the Anti-Corruption Bureau offices.

Additionally, Kaumba expressed disappointment over the exclusion of former President Lazarus Chakwera from Mutharika’s inauguration ceremony, calling it “evil” and demanding an explanation from the organizing committee.

He also questioned the silence of former Presidents Bakili Muluzi and Dr. Joyce Banda on the matter.
