Chaos in Nkhatabay as community chases primary school teachers

Learning was disrupted at Mwambazi Primary School after angry villagers attacked teachers and vandalised a house. Education authorities have since relocated all staff for safety.

The chaos followed an incident involving a Standard 5 girl who was allegedly attacked by her teacher’s wife.

The student had gone to deliver notebooks at the teacher’s house. According to local resident Arthur Kasambala, the teacher’s wife, who has been unwell, grabbed the girl by the neck and covered her mouth before the student managed to escape.

After hearing the story, the girl’s parents and other villagers stormed the school to confront teachers.

The confrontation turned violent, leaving teachers injured and property destroyed.

Nkhatabay education director Votie Mboweni confirmed the relocation of teachers.

He said the school remains open but learning has stopped due to ongoing community threats against staff.

This is not the first time Mwambazi Primary School has faced unrest, in 2022, a teacher was expelled from the same school following accusations of witchcraft.
