Attorney General backs Mutharika on appointments

Attorney General Frank Mbeta has defended the appointment of Gabriel Chembezi as ACB caretaker Director General, citing compliance with the Corrupt Practices Act.

Mbeta says President Peter Mutharika’s decision follows Section 8 of the Act, allowing for a competent person to be appointed when both Director General and Deputy positions are vacant.

The move follows criticism from legal experts and civil society groups, who argue the appointment was unprocedural.

Mbeta explains the appointment is lawful, with the Act providing for up to six months’ acting tenure, during which suitable candidates are interviewed.
