“Leave my money”-MPs and Councillors may fight against over CDF money
Members of Parliament (MPs) and ward councillors in Malawi are bracing for a potential fight over the control and management of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), now valued at 5 billion kwacha.
Mover of the motion, Chambulanyina Jere (Mzimba South), has called for a review to reclaim authority over the fund.
But Civil society leaders are urging citizens to resist any attempts by MPs to reverse a recent court ruling that granted ward councillors a larger role in CDF disbursement.
The court’s decision, hailed as a step toward greater accountability, empowers ward councillors to manage funds for local development projects.
Benedicto Kondowe, a civil society leader, stated has since said Malawians must stand firm against any legislative attempts to undermine this ruling.
It is crucial for the empowerment of local governance in Malawi.
However, Jere argues that the current system lacks oversight to ensure funds are used effectively.
” But critics warn that reverting to previous arrangements could jeopardize transparency and diminish local voices.
