‘We have not arrested Chakwera’-Malawi Police

President Lazarus Chakwera

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has categorically denied rumors regarding the arrest of former President Lazarus Chakwera. Deputy National Police Public Relations Officer Alfred Chimthere emphasized that no arrest warrant has been issued for Chakwera, urging the public to verify information through official channels before dissemination.

“Claims suggesting the arrest of the former Head of State are entirely false and misleading,” Chimthere stated in a press release late Wednesday night. He underscored the importance of responsible sharing of information, particularly in an era where misinformation can proliferate rapidly online.

The police’s clarifications come as they intensify investigations into alleged property looting at the Kamuzu Palace, one of the nation’s primary State Residences. As part of these investigations, Godfrey Jalale, the former Director of Security at State Residences, has been apprehended on suspicions of involvement in the theft of police dogs from the Palace.

Chimthere revealed that law enforcement agencies have also secured a search warrant to explore allegations that the missing police dogs might be housed at Chakwera’s residence in Area 10, Lilongwe. “We are pursuing all leads to uncover the truth behind these allegations,” he added.
