Thousands of Malawians deported from South Africa
Malawi is facing a significant influx of returnees, with over 1,500 citizens arriving through the Mwanza border alone this month, after being deported from South Africa for being in the country illegally.
According to Sophina Mwenda, spokesperson for the Immigration Department at Mwanza One Stop border post, the number is alarming, with over 10,500 Malawians having returned since January.Mwenda highlighted the challenges these returnees face, stating that many struggle to find transport to get to their home districts, as buses drop them at the border with no further arrangements. This leaves many stranded, with limited options for onward travel. The situation raises concerns about the welfare of these returnees, many of whom may be returning with limited resources and no clear plans for reintegration. The government has a responsibility to ensure these individuals are supported and provided with necessary assistance to rebuild their lives. The deportations from South Africa are not a new phenomenon, but the numbers are significant, and the impact on Malawi’s economy and social services is substantial. As the country grapples with its own economic challenges, the return of thousands of citizens adds pressure on already stretched resources.
