Malawians slam Luntha Television for ‘killing’ Esau Kanyenda

Luntha Television is facing backlash after posting a false report on social media claiming former Malawi national football team striker Essau Kanyenda had passed away.

The station quoted “close sources” in the post, which has since been deleted.

The news sparked outrage among Malawians, with many taking to Facebook to criticize Luntha for spreading unverified information.

The timing was particularly unfortunate, as Kanyenda had announced just a day earlier that he was battling liver cancer.

One user, Timothy Phiri threatened to file a lawsuit against Luntha, accusing them of unprofessionalism.

“Family members elsewhere would pull a law suit accusing Luntha of being unprofessional,” he wrote.

Kanyenda, a beloved figure in Malawian football, had recently gone public with his health struggles, seeking support and prayers from fans.
