“Stop parading witnesses outside courts”- Lawyers tell Malawi Police Officers

The Malawi Law Society (MLS) is warning law enforcement against “media trials”, saying exposing suspects to the public and asking them to reenact crimes risks undermining their constitutional rights.

MLS President Davis Njobvu notes parading suspects before the media infringes on the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Njobvu’s comments follow police taking six suspects linked to Dr. Victoria Bobe’s murder to Chigumula to demonstrate the alleged crime .

He warns pre-trial publicity can fuel public unrest if court outcomes differ from narratives formed.

Police spokesperson Lael Chintembo says they have not received any complaints about the matter.
