Mutharika says Govt will cover funeral expenses for Eli Njuchi Band members
Malawi President Peter Mutharika has announced that the government will cover all funeral expenses for the five Eli Njuchi band members who died in a road accident.
The band members, Elivacy Matamando Muyaba, Wilfred Kupengule Jnr, Vincent Mkwinda, McFarlen Banda, and Raphael Chitsonga, were travelling to Lilongwe for a concert at BICC when the accident occurred in Ntcheu.
In a statement, President Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika expressed their shock and sadness at the loss of the talented musicians, describing them as “instrumental figures whose passion and artistry helped shape the soul of Malawi’s music industry”.
The government has also paid tribute to the victims, with the President stating that their passing is a “devastating blow” to the nation.
The funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
