Three die after heavy rains in Malawi

Continuous rains have wrought havoc across Malawi, claiming 3 lives and leaving 41 people injured.

The devastating impact of collapsing walls has been felt in several parts of the country between Dec 22-28, 2025.

According to Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) Commissioner Wilson Mollen, a total of 7,205 households (approximately 32,422 people) have been affected by the relentless rains.

Mollen disclosed that verified and preliminary damage reports have been received from 13 councils, prompting the department to swiftly mobilize relief efforts .

“We are working tirelessly to provide essential support to those affected,” he said.

In preparation for potential further emergencies, DoDMA has put standby arrangements in place for a national search and rescue team .

The team comprises personnel from the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), the Malawi Police Service, and the Malawi Red Cross Society.

Mollen warned that the threat of floods remains high, adding that his department is collaborating with the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services and local councils to disseminate critical warning messages.
