Balaka woman arrested for having a GUN

Police in Balaka district have arrested a 55-year-old woman, Rhoda Amos, for allegedly being found in possession of a firearm without a permit and a licence.

The woman, was arrested at Lupanga Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.

Police report indicates that on December 14, 2025, unknown person stole a Jericho Pistol belonging to Balaka Police Station.

Whilst investigations were still in progress, Police received a tip that the suspect is keeping an unidentified riffle in her house, which prompted law enforcers especially detectives to follow up the tip.

On January 1, 2026, the house of the suspect was raided and upon searching in her house, it was discovered that the unidentified Pistol and seven ammunition were hidden in the sack bag whilst wrapped with a plastic jumbo.

Upon seizure of the pistol and ammunitions, the suspect disclosed that the pistol was sent to her by her son Amos Poison aged 35 from Lupanga Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District, who is currently in Johannesburg, South Africa and the pistol was transported to Malawi whilst hidden in the subwoofer.

The suspect, Rhoda Amos, who comes from Lupanga Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of found in possession of a firearm without a permit and a licence.
