Rains cause havoc in Mzuzu, thirty households need assistance

Over 30 households in various locations of in Mzuzu City have been rendered destitute following a heavy down pour late Sunday afternoon.

Confirming the development in an interview, Mzuzu City Council Disaster Desk Officer Macdonald Gondwe said over six wards in the city have been affected with heavy rains, strong winds and flash floods following the down pour.

He was however quick to mention that Ward Disaster committees are already on the ground assessing and helping affected residents accordingly.

“The stormy rains have indeed caused havoc such that we are all up and down assisting those affected.

“Currently Zolozolo is the hardest hit with most houses clogged with water and we are currently on the ground getting to assist them with shelter and other immediate needs,” said Gondwe who is also the council’s Public Relations Officer.

Councillor for Zolozolo West, one of the affected wards said the immediate need of affected households is food since most of them have their food items and beddings clogged following the downpour.

Amongst affected townships are Zolozolo, Chiputula, Mzilawayingwe, Masasa and katawa.
