Chimwendo wants his arrest stayed
Former Local government minister Richard Chimwendo Banda has filed an urgent appeal in the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal to stay a 90-day remand warrant issued on December 15, 2025, by the Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe.
The appeal hearing is set for January 9, 2026, before Justice of Appeal Dorothy Nyakaunda Kamanga.Chimwendo Banda, who is also the General Secretary of the Malawi Congress Party is currently on remand at Maula Prison, is seeking to stay or suspend the warrant, citing unlawful detention.
His lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, emphasizes that Chimwendo Banda is innocent and the State hasn’t provided evidence linking him to attempted murder allegations.
The High Court is yet to rule on Chimwendo Banda’s bail application, heard on December 24, 2025, before Justice Mzonde Mvula.
Kadzipatike notes that the bail application and the appeal are separate, aiming for Chimwendo Banda’s quickest release.He is facing attempted murder charges.
