Malawi to plant 41 million trees this year
The Malawi government has set an ambitious target to plant 41 million trees in the 2025/2026 National Forestry Season.
Natural Resources Minister Alfred Gangata made the announcement in Lilongwe.
He revealed that the season will be officially launched this Friday at Mpata Primary School in Phalombe District.
The launch event is expected to be presided over by Second Vice President Enoch Chihana.
The event will highlight the government’s commitment to environmental conservation.
This year’s theme, “Trees and Forests for Community Resilience,” underscores the critical role trees and forests play in strengthening communities’ ability to cope with climatic, environmental, economic, and social challenges.
Gangata emphasized that trees and forests are crucial for Malawi’s resilience, providing food, medicine, shelter, and income, while also helping communities adapt to climate change.
“Trees and forests are not just a resource, they’re a lifeline for our communities,” he said.
The government hopes that the tree-planting initiative will not only boost forest cover but also enhance community livelihoods and contribute to national development.
With the launch just around the corner, Malawians are eager to see the implementation of this ambitious plan.
