Over 4 Million children unregistered in Malawi

Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhitho, has revealed a challenge in the country’s efforts to ensure universal birth registration of children in Malawi.

Speaking in Lilongwe, Mukhitho revealed that approximately 4.6 million children under 16 remain unregistered.

Mukhitho: We have to do more.

The Minister’s remarks came during a press briefing launching the National Birth Registration Campaign, aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16.9.

This goal mandates countries to ensure legal identity for all, including birth registration, by 2030.

The campaign will unfold in seven phases across 25 districts.

Government has allocated K5.4 billion for the first two phases in the 2025/2026 financial year, demonstrating its commitment to addressing the issue.
