Officer arrested for embezzling betting money

Police in Mponela, Dowa District, have arrested a 35-year-old Premier Bet employee, Bonface Chande for using K977,600 of the company’s money to place bets.

The incident happened on January 20, 2026, at Chimwaza Trading Centre.

Chande’s manager at Premier Bet reported him to the police.

The manager had gone to check on the outlet and found Chande had switched off the generator.

Chande claimed the generator was faulty, but it was actually working fine.

When asked about the money from two days of business, Chande said there was none.He later admitted using K977,600 to place betting spins.

Mponela Police Station spokesperson Macpatson Msadala has confirmed the arrest.

Chande will face a charge of theft by servant in court soon.

He is from Chabu 3Dluka Village, Senior Chief Mlumbe, Zomba District.
