One year old girl dies in a well

A girl aged one year and six months has died after drowning in a well located Mponela, Dowa district.

Mponela Police Station spokesperson Macpatson Msadala reported that the child had been accompanying her mother to a village bank meeting held in proximity to the well.

“During the meeting, it is believed that the toddler wandered away unnoticed and went to play near the well, where she accidentally fell in. Her mother later retrieved the child from the well, but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful,” stated Msadala.

He further mentioned that a postmortem examination performed at Mponela Health Centre confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation due to drowning.

Msadala has urged parents, guardians, and community members to collaborate in ensuring the safety of children through vigilant supervision and securing wells to avert similar tragedies.
