Mtumbuka visits Betere heavy rain victims

Aspiring Member of Parliament for Rumphi Central Constituency, Dr Matthews Mtumbuka, has expressed sympathy with residents of Betere following heavy rainfall that damaged 32 hectares of crop fields and affected 86 households.

Dr Mtumbuka said he was shocked by the extent of the damage, which has left many farmers counting losses after their crops were washed away by the rains.

He made the remarks after touring the affected maize fields in the area, where he described the situation as devastating for families who depend on farming for their livelihoods.

“I am deeply touched by the extent of the damage caused by the heavy rains. Many households have lost their crops and now face uncertainty,” said Dr Mtumbuka.

One of the affected farmers, Kenani Chisale, said he felt relieved by Dr Mtumbuka’s visit, noting that he had lost hope after witnessing his entire field being washed away by the heavy rainfall.

During the visit, Dr Mtumbuka provided financial assistance to five households whose fields were the most severely affected, as a way of helping them cope with the immediate impact of the disaster.

Chairperson for the Betere Village Development Committee (VDC), Harold Katumbi, thanked Dr Mtumbuka for the support rendered to the affected families.

Katumbi said the assistance would go a long way in easing the suffering of the victims and called on other well-wishers to emulate Dr Mtumbuka’s gesture in supporting communities affected by natural disasters.
