Man injured after an explosion in Mangochi
A 21-year-old man identified as Macdonald Makumba, is currently undergoing medical treatment at Mangochi District Hospital after an explosion involving live ammunition.
The event took place in Mtalimanja village, located within Mangochi Township.
According to reports, Makumba was present at his shop when his 15-year-old male companion brought three rounds of ammunition, which he purportedly collected from the Malombe area adjacent to the African Parks Forest.
Suspecting that the items were indeed ammunition, Makumba attempted to verify their authenticity by striking the primer of one round with a screwdriver.
During this process, the ammunition detonated, resulting in injuries to his chest and left hand.
He was promptly transported to Mangochi District Hospital, where he is presently receiving medical care.
The incident has been reported to the Mangochi Police Station, and a team of police detectives has visited the site, recovering one 7.62mm cartridge.
In the meantime, the teenage boy has been called in for questioning, and investigations are ongoing to locate the remaining ammunition.
Police officials in the district are advising the public that anyone who encounters ammunition or suspected explosive materials should refrain from touching or tampering with them and should immediately report to the nearest police station for safe disposal, as mishandling such items can result in severe injuries or fatalities.
