Mzuni suspends staff over exam results drama
Mzuzu University (Mzuni) has taken the step of suspending several staff members and has also postponed the graduation of 55 students due to allegations of academic fraud that the institution is currently probing.
A statement issued by the university this evening indicates that the 55 students are part of a larger group of 103 whose Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) portals were compromised.
In response to reports suggesting that certain degrees with distinction and credit were awarded inappropriately, Mzuni has noted that some final-year students have been instructed to return next year to restart their studies from level one.
At present, Mzuni has stated that the institution’s legal team, with assistance from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), is investigating the situation.
The statement partially reads: “Currently, the investigations are ongoing with technical support from the ACB and the Mzuzu University Legal Counsel. None of the students under suspicion is a candidate for a first-class award, which, according to social media claims, would be considered equivalent to a distinction.”
It adds: “As the investigations progress, certain staff members have been identified as suspects. Consequently, the University has promptly suspended them to ensure that the investigations can proceed smoothly.”
