“I don’t love you anymore,”- Divorces hit Phalombe
In January 2026, the Phalombe Magistrate Court recorded a total of 22 divorce cases, in the district Malawi Data has learnt.
According to statistics, 12 of these marriages were officially dissolved, while five were reconciled.
Amos Chibwana, a child rights activist, has characterized these statistics as alarming.
Another activist, Jennifer Mkandawire, has stated that this trend poses a significant threat to the future of children.
The Phalombe Magistrate Court indicates that poverty and men abandoning their marriages are among the factors contributing to the increase in divorce cases.
