Teenager sent to prison for rape
A 19-year-old man identified as Mike Mpale has been sentenced to five years in prison for the defilement of a four-year-old girl.
The sentence was delivered today by First Grade Magistrate Fred Juma Chilowetsa during a mobile court session held at the headquarters of Senior Chief Mavwere in the district.
In his judgment, Chilowetsa stated that the prison term is intended to deter potential offenders, emphasizing that such incidents are increasing in the district.
The offender, Mpale, who is from Mavwere village, TA Kalolo in Lilongwe, committed the crime in November of the previous year at the Kamwendo trade centre in Mchinji, as reported by the District Police Station’s State Prosecutor Anusa Elias.
In related news, Chikondi Malemia, Project Officer for the Girls Empowerment Network (GENET) under the Christian Aid-funded Equality for Empowerment (E4E) project, mentioned that the mobile court initiative aims to enhance awareness regarding the protection of girls from abuse and to promote their education.
