“Address insecurity”- Umodzi Party leader urges Government

Umodzi Party President Thomas Kaumba has expressed deep concern over Malawi’s escalating security crisis, citing daily attacks, abductions, and violence.

Speaking at a press conference, Kaumba emphasized the government’s failure to protect citizens, calling it a “crisis of national survival”.

“The primary duty of any government is to protect its citizens. When that contract is broken, we face a crisis,” Kaumba said.

Kaumba: We want actions.

He highlighted the plurge in criminal activities, including theft, vandalism, and violent attacks, affecting innocent people.Kaumba also raised concerns about attacks on people with albinism, saying arrests alone aren’t enough to address the issue.

He urged leaders to show political will and implement rigorous remedies.

The Umodzi Party president called for the release of the 2019 commission of inquiry report on attacks and killings, saying taxpayers’ money was spent on it.

He also pointed to porous borders aiding illegal immigration and security threats.

Kaumba urged parliament to discuss these issues and address security concerns traumatizing citizens.

He cited the recent abduction of Crossroads Hotel’s Managing Director, saying it’s a wake-up call that no one is safe.

“We demand change. The Ministry of Homeland Security must act with speed and stop bragging about progress,” Kaumba said, criticizing the minister and his deputy.

Kaumba asked security agencies to properly investigate the abduction and stop dilly-dallying, referencing past cases like Dr. Victoria Bobe and Isah Njaunju’s murders.

The party is urging the government to take concrete actions to address the security crisis and protect Malawians.
