Court bails electricity lines vandals

The High Court in Blantyre has granted bail to seven employees of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) who are charged with the theft of copper electricity cables.

The individuals in question were apprehended earlier this month on allegations of stealing electricity cables from their office in Blantyre.

In the meantime, Peter Mchiza, the Public Relations Officer for Blantyre Police, has stated that the police are collaborating with the electricity provider, ESCOM, to avert any further incidents of theft.

The individuals facing charges include Alex Gama, 38, from Machinga; Humphrey Yohane, 23, from Mulanje; Don Singano, 36, from Ntcheu; and Alick Mpalume, 38, from Chiradzulu.

Additionally, the group comprises Martin Lyford Mgunda, 48, from Kasungu; George Chafutwa, 46, from Mchinji; and Berlington Evance from Zomba.

The court has subsequently postponed the case until February 22, 2026.
