Strong tone: APM issues decree on private health services
Malawi President Peter Mutharika has issued an executive order which prohibits all personnel in public hospitals and health facilities from owning, operating, or holding shares in private clinics or pharmacies.
The order mandates that any public health worker with such business interests must divest them within 30 days.
Mutharika warns that those who do not comply will face termination and potential legal repercussions.
In a statement, the President expressed his concern regarding reports that certain health workers are soliciting payments from patients prior to providing treatment, while others are directing patients to their privately owned facilities for superior care.
He characterized this practice as illegal, unethical, and a breach of patients’ constitutional rights.
