Nkhotakota top council officials ‘swindle’ millions

Nkhotakota District Commissioner Ben Tonho and the Former Director of Finance at Nkhotakota District Council, Khumbo Masankhula, have been placed on a three-month leave while investigations are conducted regarding the alleged mismanagement of over K600 million.

This confirmation was provided by Chimwemwe Njoloma, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government.

“The matter was brought to attention during a visit by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, to the council, where the Council Chairperson pointed out the alleged mismanagement of funds, yet no action was taken,” she stated.

Njoloma further indicated that the allegations involve irregular transactions, inter-borrowing, and the diversion of funds exceeding MK600 million from their intended purposes to carry out council activities, all without the approval of the National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC).

Additionally, she mentioned that the ministry has requested the National Audit Office to conduct an investigation into this issue.
