Over 20 Ethiopians arrested in Malawi

Authorities in Karonga have arrested 22 Ethiopian adolescents, aged between 12 and 18, for purportedly entering Malawi without authorization, following a tip-off regarding illegal immigrants concealed within a residence in the Chimalawanthu region.

As reported by police spokesperson Margret Msiska Ngulube, law enforcement officials conducted a raid on a property in the specified area on 18 February 2026, discovering the minors hidden in various rooms.

“None of the adolescents possessed valid travel documentation, resulting in their prompt detention while we continue to search for the property owner, Andrea Nyirenda Chimalawanthu, who was not present during the operation,” Ngulube stated.

The minors are anticipated to appear in court shortly on charges of unlawful entry.
