MCP sees foul play in electricity failures in parliament

The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has asserted that the electrical failure which caused Parliament to adjourn prematurely on Thursday was a calculated effort to hinder discussion on the Constituency Development Fund Bill.

The session was halted due to this disruption, which also resulted in the suspension of five MCP members for disorderly behavior on Friday.

After the Speaker instructed the five legislators to exit the House, all MCP members conducted a walkout in protest.

Moses Kunkuyu, the MCP Whip in Parliament, stated that the government was aware of the opposition’s intention to interrogate the recent purchase of Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre using pension funds, among other matters.

Kunkuyu further mentioned that the party intends to request CCTV footage from the Speaker’s office to ascertain who accessed the switch room, emphasizing that the power failure affected only the chamber while other offices remained unaffected.

In the meantime, Shadreck Namalomba, the Deputy Leader of the House, criticized the MCP walkout on Friday, labeling it as an inappropriate interruption of parliamentary activities.
