Govt to undertake new investigation into Chilima plane accident

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Charles Mhango has declared that the government will initiate a new investigation into the Chikangawa military plane crash, which resulted in the deaths of former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others in June 2024.

Mhango made this declaration in Parliament while delivering a progress report on the investigations concerning the incident, indicating that previous inquiries did not yield definitive answers regarding the cause of the disaster.

“I wish to report that this esteemed House has been pleased to direct that indeed a new inquiry and investigation should be conducted into the accident that occurred on 10th June 2024,” Mhango informed the lawmakers.

The minister noted that his examination of the reports generated by the Commission of Inquiry and Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation uncovered deficiencies that undermined the reliability of the earlier conclusions.
