Ex cabinet minister arrested for having fake US Dollars

Malawi police officers have arrested former Member of Parliament for Dowa South East and former Cabinet Minister, Halima Daud after she was found in possession of suspected counterfeit foreign currency.

The arrest follows a search operation conducted at her residence in Lumbadzi, Dowa by detectives from the Fiscal and Fraud Section in conjunction with officials from the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM).

During the operation at her residence, officers recovered 76,900 USD suspected to be counterfeit together with assorted materials bearing designs imitating genuine currency notes.

Daud, aged 65, a businesswoman from Mtimaukanena Village under Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa district, was immediately taken into custody following the discovery.

MPS has since seized the suspected counterfeit currency and related materials as exhibits pending examination and analysis by the RBM.

She remains in Police custody and is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges related to possession of suspected counterfeit currency and articles intended for currency imitation.
