NOCMA urged to cast revenue net wider

The Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Corporations has called upon the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) to investigate alternative transportation options, including water, rail, and pipeline transport.

In a meeting with NOCMA officials held in Salima district, Committee Chairperson Ayuba James emphasized that dependence on road transport renders the country susceptible to high fuel transportation expenses, which in turn lead to increased fuel prices.

James conveyed optimism that enhancing water or rail transport, such as utilizing boats or ships to transport fuel from Karonga to Liwonde, could assist in reducing fuel costs.

NOCMA Deputy Chief Executive Officer Micklas Reuben mentioned that NOCMA is involved in extensive discussions aimed at advancing water transportation in line with the national transport strategy.
