Musician Lulu has stated that Malawi’s primary food, Nsima, is of little value and not even important, casting surprise why people even like it.

Cost: It is an economical staple; for example, a family of five may spend approximately $55 CAD to meet their food requirements for a month, primarily relying on maize for nsima.

Preparation: It is a thick, porridge-like dough made by cooking maize flour in water.Nsima is the everyday staple food of Malawi, consumed by most households at least once or twice daily, often serving as both lunch and dinner.

Made from maize flour and water, it holds a significant place in the culture, with locals often asserting that a meal is incomplete without it.
