Kasakula appears in court today

Former MBC Director General George Kasakula and former Director of Finance Jack Kamwachale are anticipated to appear in court this morning, where they will face formal charges and be requested to enter a plea.

This development follows investigations conducted by the Malawi Police Service regarding alleged financial irregularities at the public broadcaster.

Kasakula’s attorney Bentry Nyondo indicated that the defense team will ascertain the specific charges when the case is presented in court.

Nyondo mentioned that he could not provide additional details about the case but confirmed that court proceedings are scheduled for Friday.

Previously, National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo informed the media that the two individuals are under investigation for alleged financial mismanagement believed to have taken place between July 2021 and December 2025.

Chimtembo stated that the suspects are also accused of authorizing an unauthorized payment to a hotel in Lilongwe, where the former director general and his family reportedly occupied a presidential suite beyond his official entitlement.

Additionally, the police have initiated inquiries into the procurement of an outside broadcasting vehicle from Italy, which has reportedly not yet arrived in the country, raising further concerns regarding the procurement process.
