27 prisoners pardoned in Malawi

President Peter Mutharika has granted clemency to 27 inmates as a gesture of compassion during the Eid and Easter festivities.

In a statement, Linda Moyo, the Secretary for Homeland Security, indicated that this pardon is executed under the authority bestowed upon the President by section 82(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.

“This group includes inmates who have completed half of their sentences, elderly individuals, women, those with chronic illnesses, and those who have been selected for admission to public universities,” Moyo stated.

The statement also noted that the inmates who received pardons have fulfilled the criteria outlined in the Guidelines for the Granting of Pardon to Convicted Prisoners and have shown evidence of rehabilitative progress during their incarceration.
