A pregnant city of Blantyre: Teenagers dominate

Blantyre has recorded a total of 39,748 pregnancies in 2025, with 6,068 of these being classified as teen pregnancies.

Chrissy Banda, the spokesperson for Blantyre DHO, says that the low adoption of contraceptive methods is one of the factors driving this increase in pregnancies.

Banda noted that the inadequate use of condoms among the youth is also a significant contributor to both unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.

She mentioned that efforts are underway to offer family planning services at healthcare facilities, outreach clinics, and within the communities.

Health Expert George Jobe emphasized the importance of enhancing awareness regarding family planning methods and ensuring that more individuals have access to contraceptive options.
