Hippo causes canoe tragedy

Four people have died when a hippopotamus hit a canoe on the Shire River, in Chikwawa district.
The victims, identified as Enert Tesifolo, 38, Alick Kadyamba, 47, Peter Mtengo, 51, and Elina Nsona, 21, were among 12 people aboard the canoe, traveling from their gardens.
According to Chancy Mfune Zare, Deputy Publicist for Chikwawa Police Station, a hippopotamus suddenly emerged, striking the canoe and causing it to capsize.
Eight people were rescued by bystanders, while the four victims unfortunately drowned.
Post-mortem examinations conducted at Chikwawa District Hospital confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation.
