Chaos rocks Mbayani market

This morning, Mbayani Market in Blantyre turned into a battlefield after angry residents set on fire the car of former market chairperson Andrew Mandiwe.

Mandiwe, who earlier this year survived mob justice after being accused of killing a market worker known as Bondoki.

This morning Mandiwe made a surprise comeback to the market today thinking the past was forgotten.The moment people saw him, tempers flared.

Youths armed with sticks and stones chased him down, while others torched his vehicle near the sugarcane stalls. Reports on the ground suggest Mandiwe was badly injured before police rushed him to hospital.

For now, police are yet to issue a statement, but eyewitnesses say they are shocked that the man they thought was behind bars was walking free.
